New On Power BI Showcase – Environmental Data Reporting

by | Announcement, Power BI

One of the things we love about Power BI is the fact that we continue to discover new things to do with it. We’ve seen this in the reports we regularly add into our Power BI Showcase. This time, we’ve added yet another field where Power BI comes in handy — and that’s environmental data reporting.

Power BI Showcase

The Power BI Showcase delivers more learning opportunities to users who want to learn best practices from the work of others. It’s a collection of downloadable reports and dashboards in pbix format and this month, we’ve added 6 new reports.

Environmental Data Report

The first report was made by Tim Weinzapfel who managed to create an intuitive report that comes with a user-friendly dashboard.

The Executive Dashboard was extensive, allowing users to filter data per state and to further filter the outcome based on different indicators. This is a great way to summarize the data, knowing that the indicators are completely unrelated to each other.

The button that allows users to toggle between different rainfall trend charts was a great feature in the Precipitation Indicator analysis, because it gives all the information needed without having to send users to separate pages.

Tim also gave users the choice to look at the Air Toxin analysis from two perspectives — by state or by toxin.

Most of the pages also came with smart narratives that effectively give users further insight into the data being presented.

Environmental Statistics Report

Another report that focused on staying intuitive and user-friendly, this report by Paul Gerber used various filter options to allow users to break down the data based on the specific factors they want to focus on.

Paul is an engineer, so out of habit, he immediately looked for correlations between the different datasets. He looked at toxins and found out how this impacted the number of asthma cases. He also looked at the variance in number of cases between adults and children.

Paul used basic DAX measures, then branched out from there. He also admits that he used the TREATAS function a lot and took advantage of dynamic text measures for his graphs.

Environmental Report

This environmental report was created by one of our Enterprise DNA Experts, Alex Badiu. He created a comprehensive overview of how different environmental factors impacted the health issue in focus. He laid out the data using custom visuals from Icon Map and Mapbox and applied a lot of innovative navigational elements.

The dark backgrounds and the contrast of colors made the entire report look more compelling and professional. The tooltips he used also made every single page impressively informative, giving users who will view his report a straightforward and detailed look at the data he played with and how the different factors impacted the results.

Environmental Insights Dashboard

Our own founder, Sam McKay, created this Environmental Insights Dashboard that boasts of a clean design that makes all the details easy to go over.

The navigation is also exceptional, allowing users to go from one page to the next without feeling overwhelmed with the data they’re being presented. The icons used in this report played a huge role not just in the overall aesthetics, but in the ease of navigation as well.

Environmental Indicators Report

Kim Cook’s Environmental Indicators Report shows a lot of creativity and proves to be a feast for the eyes. Of course, visuals play a huge role, especially in terms of making it easy for people viewing the report to interpret the data being presented; Kim did a great job of doing just that.

The way Kim highlighted important points in each page made them stand out against the simple backgrounds and neutral colors. The navigation was also exceptional, making it easy for end-users to find their way around the report.

It’s interesting to know that Kim almost gave up on finishing this report due to a number of challenges she met along the way. But with the support of our community, she soldiered on and created an amazing report that shows how much she has advanced from being one of our rookies to an experienced Power BI user that’s open to every learning opportunity presented.

In the end, she came up with this impressive report that gave a clear summary of the indicators and overall trends.

Environmental Insights

The last report we added in our showcase this month is from Fernando Moreira, who managed to balance great visuals, numerous filter options and a healthy variety of graphs to produce and overall impressive report.

Fernando really took advantage of contrasts here, using bright colors in his visuals against a gray backdrop. This was a smart decision on his part as it further highlighted the data being presented. All of the pages were clean and were free of clutter, making it easier for end-users to analyze the data being presented.

The Power BI Showcase

It’s exciting to see how much learning our members are going to get from these additions to the Power BI Showcase. It truly is a huge advantage that they get to download each of these reports and dive into every aspect of how these reports were made and what elements and techniques were used.

For those who are yet to upgrade to a full membership, take this as a signal for you to do so. A membership doesn’t just give you full access to this showcase; it also unlocks exclusive resources, classes and events that can help you become the best data expert that you can be.

All the best,

Enterprise DNA Team
