New Course: Power Query/M – Nested Structures

by | Announcement

Data analysts need to be constantly learning to stay ahead of the competition and to remain competitive in the job market.

As the use of data rapidly evolves, data analysts should evolve, too. This is why we always come up with new courses in our On-Demand platform to help you stay up to date with the latest industry trends and best practices.

We’re so excited to announce the launch of Power Query/M – Nested Structures as our second course this year.

What To Expect From This Course

The M language, also known as the Power Query language, is a powerful tool for data transformation within Power BI. One of the key features of the M language is its support for nested structures, which allows for easy manipulation and organization of data.

Understanding and learning how to interact with nested structured values in the M language is essential for those who are working within the Power Query and Power BI environments.

Just as virtual tables are the key to unlocking the real power of DAX, learning how to manipulate nested structures will unlock your ability to perform nearly any complex transformation within Power Query.

With the knowledge and techniques from this course, you’ll be able to easily manipulate, analyze, and visualize large amounts of data to gain valuable insights.

Here are some of the details of what you will learn during this course

  • A quick introduction to Lists, Records, and Tables
  • Explore expand and extract options
  • Access structured values
  • Use row index and/or key match lookup
  • Selection and projection
  • Expanded vs nested transformations
  • and more!

Who Is This Course For

This course is for the intermediate to advanced Data Analyst who wants to make the most out of Power Query to push transformations “upstream” (e.g., closer to the data source, per Roche’s Maxim), to increase report transparency, maintainability, and speed.

What Are Needed To Take This Course?

To reap the maximum benefit from this course, you should have a working knowledge of the Power Query user interface and have completed Melissa de Korte’s course on Power Query/M Fundamentals

The Power Query/M – Nested Structures course will build on the knowledge of basic Power Query structures (values, lists, records, tables, and functions) that was covered extensively in the fundamental course.

About Your Instructor

Melissa de Korte is a Power Platform enthusiast and is Enterprise DNA’s resident expert on all things related to Power Query.

She’s our go-to person when it comes to ETL and modelling and has delivered practical Power Query solutions in both Excel and Power BI for our Power BI community.
