January Updates: How We Started The Year At Enterprise DNA

by | Announcement, Power BI

It was a great start of the year here at Enterprise DNA as we saw a lot of new and exciting things rolled out in January. Just in case you missed a few things, here are a few updates for January. Make sure you check each of them out and find out more about what’s been keeping the team busy so far this year.

Brand New Course – Optimizing DAX

A brand new course has been added to the Enterprise DNA portal! Optimizing DAX shares some best practices on how to develop data models and optimize the performance of your Power BI reports. It also gives an overview of tools and techniques that you can use to resolve any issues in your measures.

The best thing about this new course is that it makes it easier to understand how the DAX calculation engines work. This can ultimately pave the way not just to better performance, but to a better user experience overall.

This new course is also the first one that’s not developed by our CEO Sam McKay, but instead, is made by one of our experts, Nick Moné! In the coming months, expect new content and courses made by other content creators from Enterprise DNA.

In relation to the course, our experts are also introducing what we call the Optimization Lab soon.

The process involves asking for optimization problems from active members of the Enterprise DNA Forum. Then, Nick will choose one problem every month and apply the relevant concepts discussed in the optimization course. It’s going to be a great way to show some practical applications of the topics discussed in the course Optimizing DAX.

First Power BI Challenge for 2021 – COVID-19 Reporting and Invite for Corporate Sponsorship

Seeing how successful our Power BI Challenges were last year, it’s only fitting that we continue the tradition this year. So we kicked the year off with something that has impacted the way we live life as we know it – COVID-19.

The 1st Power BI Challenge for the year requires participants to come up with a one-page report showing the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data is taken from the extensive resources provided by the John Hopkins University, and focuses mostly on the number of confirmed cases, deaths, and recoveries.

Just like before, we’re choosing a member and a non-member winner and will be giving a special prize to a first-timer.

We’re also reminding you guys that we’re still accepting corporate sponsorships for our challenges. Having new sponsors would make these challenges even more interesting and could motivate more people to join in the fun. Let us know if you’re interested and we’d be happy to discuss this with you further.

Problem Of The Week Continues To Roll Out Weekly

The Problem of the Week is another initiative that made the latter part of last year more interesting for the community. This year, we’re going to continue the practice of posting a real-world problem every week. As with the previous setup, the solutions will alternate between the use of DAX and Power Query.

  • 1st Wednesday of the month – DAX-based problem to be posted
  • 2nd Wednesday of the month – the solution to the DAX-based problem and a video walkthrough will be posted
  • 3rd Wednesday of the month – Power Query-based problem
  • 4th Wednesday of the month – the solution to the Power Query-based problem and a video walkthrough will be posted

Especially on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, everyone is encouraged to share their own solutions on the forum. Remember that this is more of an opportunity to collaborate instead of being a competition. We do have a raffle draw for the participants in each round, with 5 winners getting a cool vinyl sticker that says “Enterprise DNA Problem Solver”. That should add a bit more fun to each round.

The Analytic Mind Weekly Podcast

Our CEO Sam McKay continues his weekly podcast call The Analytic Mind, with a new episode every week on Spotify, iTunes and Google Podcast.

The learning opportunities are just endless when it comes to data. That’s why Sam makes the most out of these learning opportunities by inviting a different data leader to his podcast every week. This way, you can stay updated on trends, challenges, and opportunities for innovation in the world of data and analytics.

If you’re a data leader or know someone who can share insights and knowledge by guesting on our podcast, just click this link.

The Analyst Hub

We launched The Analyst Hub last year and it’s been a huge success so far! As some of you already know, it’s a collection of tools that can help you make your analysis and reports even more insightful than before.

It contains the DAX Clean Up Tool, which helps users clean up their code to minimize errors. It also has the Colour Theme Generator, which helps users become more creative in their dashboards and reports. Plus, we also have more tools to add in the near future that we know will enhance your experience as a Power BI user.

With amazing tools like these, we highly encourage those who haven’t tried The Analyst Hub yet to pop into the page for a visit and try out the tools we developed just for you.

New Chief Content Creator and Start of Monthly New Content For Enterprise DNA Education Platform

We’re officially introducing our new Chief Content Creator, Brian Julius!

You probably noticed a new face when we started rolling out new Problem of the Week videos this year. That’s none other than Brian!

With over 30 years of experience in dealing with data, we look forward to all the exciting new content that Brian is going to deliver along with other content creators. His specialty lies in applying data analytics to processes in the public sector. He loves anything DAX-related and believes in applying innovative techniques to improve the Power BI user experience.

With a new Chief Content Creator working with our other experts, we can expect new content for our members on the Enterprise DNA Education platform on a monthly basis.

The Enterprise DNA Education Platform Gets A New Look

We’ve seen a huge amount of people learning one powerful thing after another on the Enterprise DNA portal. This is why we decided to optimize the portal and make it easier to browse through and use.

The new Enterprise DNA Education Platform is more user-friendly and is cleaner to look at. This means that finding new courses to take has just become more convenient for all users.

Power BI and DAX Masterclass Concluded

We’ve concluded the Power BI and DAX Masterclass! Thanks to everyone who took the plunge and maximized the opportunity to learn even more about these topics. You all know how much emphasis we place on the never-ending need to learn, improve and find more ways to make the use of Power BI an even better experience for all of us. We appreciate that the community shares that passion.

Tune into the Enterprise DNA Events page to find out what other events you should be looking forward to this year.

All the best,

Enterprise DNA Team
