Every consumer goods company needs this
If you sell a product, good or service, you will no doubt want to be able to draw up some analysis on how you are going. What products are selling to which customers in what locations? Which warehouses or factories are producing them? How are we performing over time?
This list could be even more extensive. But where ever possible we want to focus on the main drivers of success, or what is it that the consumer of your reports or analysis wants and needs to see.
With the FMCG sales analytics submission, we have an organisation that sells chocolate and related sweet products across the USA. You could literally sub in any organisation here that creates a product. A large amount of this type of analysis is very re-usable.
Get a pulse of what’s happening
With the summary page, we want a pulse, a quick snapshot of the key metrics we would ordinarily like to review on a daily basis.
The date filter up the top, allows the consumer to quickly filter the snapshot to any grouping of time. You may want to focus on just this month, or first three months of the year, or even the whole of last year. These filters can effectively change the shape of results displayed.
Ability to filter also via any of the charts. Including by channel, warehouse, regions or individual dates.
If you want to see how any particular region has gone through time. All you have to do is select any part of the map visual and then the ‘sales completed by date’ chart will adjust to show the changes occurring through time.
Bottom left is a snapshot highlighting where the top 80% of sales come from, in terms of what products and which clients made up 80% of all sales. This would be a common phenomenon in most business where 80% of sales would be to around 20% of customers and for only 20% of products sold.
Which products are selling well, which aren’t?
Throughout the model, we have segmented products into ‘80% of sales’ and ‘other sales’. This was done because we really want to know what our key products are. Which products bring in the most revenue, and let’s just focus on those. Maybe all the future focus should be on those products? This segmenting allows an organisation to see this information in almost real time.
Analyse units produced and which channel these are selling through over time. See total revenue achieved for each individual product.
Drill into sales per day by dynamically selecting any section within the report page. Create a subset of time by using date filters at the top of the page.
Which customers are driving sales?
Which customers are driving most of the organisation’s returns? What are these customers buying? What are the most recent trends in what they are buying?
These are all extremely important questions to ask and constantly monitor as an organisation. Focus on what working, what is selling, and the clients that are buying. Continuously do more of it.
This will really bring to light who your key clients are that the sales team/s need to focus on.
Identify trends or outliers as they happen. Gain a true understanding of what is driving the sales for your business.
Review individual sales with dynamic filters
Sometimes you just want to know the details. You may want to see every separate order made for a product, or customer, or in a particular region. You may want this for yesterday, last month, last year.
Power BI is flat out an incredible filtering tool. It actually makes filtering enjoyable and very focused at the same time.
Here we may want to look at the most recent orders for a particular client and compare that to what was purchased at a similar time last year. The same could be done for some regional analysis.
You may also want to forecast changes in demand for particular products in certain regions. With enough granularity in the data, you can almost pre-determine what sales may be across your key filters.
One thing I truly hope will be prioritised by Microsoft in the near future is the ability to cross-filter across multiple charts at once. Unfortunately, if you filter by one chart currently you can not go to another chart and filter there, and keep the original filter turned on.
You can get around this by using actual filters (like a lot of the date filters at the top of these reporting pages in this demo), but it would be a massive improvement in functionality to be able to complete dynamic filtering across multiple charts at once.
