Enterprise DNA Learning Summit Overview – What You Will Learn

by | Learning Summits, Power BI, Webinars

Have had a huge response to the first Enterprise DNA Learning Summit. Thanks to all those who have already registered. This is going to be a great event with plenty to learn live about Power BI and around how to develop really high quality reports and models. You may watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.

If you haven’t registered yet, you can here – Enterprise DNA Learning Summit, November 2017

Just a reminder about the summit, it’s a 3 session event held over 4 days. Each workshop will last between 45-60 mins. I find that is enough time to go through many techniques without having to overload everyone with too much information too quickly.

I also provide replays and the resource we work through so that you can review them after each session. I find these are crucial if you don’t get something the first time, you can have a chance to review it while watching the session recording.

I thought I would run through in a bit more detail some of the things I will be covering during the sessions. I want to make sure that I really hit the right spot and tone with the training so that all attendees get the most out of it.

Throughout the 3 sessions I will be running through an end to end Power BI model/report I’ve developed. This real-world training is certainly in my opinion the best way to embed many of the analytical concepts in your mind that I’ll be covering.

The data scenario that we will be working with, is a organization based in Europe. They sell goods all throughout Europe to a range of customers. This is certainly relatable to any firm that sells something – in this case it is European based.

I want to be able to analyse information around our PnL performance, but also look much deeper and understand what’s driving the changes in performance. Changes over time and also between the products we sell and the customers we sell to.

Here’s a snapshot of the data model

Data model - learning summit

You’ll be a amazed at what insight we will be able to achieve with a data model that you may think looks quite simple. But hopefully I’ll be able to show you that it is all you need.

If you can utilize the DAX formula language well, then you’ll very quickly and effectively be able to extract a substantial amount of insight and even potentially predict results. I’m really looking forward to showcasing some of my scenario analysis techniques to show you how you can do just that.

As you know Power BI is a fantastic data discovery tool. The way you can start at a high summary level and then really drill down into some quality insights has become relatively straight forward.

The key is to setup your models well and implement the correct DAX formulas. That’s the core of what’s required, but then you have to make your reports look great.

I’m big on the visual side of Power BI reports. In my opinion if you can’t make your consumers go ‘wow that look amazing’ then it diminishes the effectiveness of your report as a whole. So, I’ll be spending a bit of time talking about how I utilize my best practice visualization techniques to engage consumers. Also you’ll be able to see and review them with the resource I make downloadable.

Just for a quick review of what will be covered during the workshop sessions during the summit.

Day 1 page

The first session will be a deep dive into a variety of report development techniques

  • Data modeling
  • DAX formulas
  • Time intelligence
  • Ranking
  • Data visualization techniques

There’s a bit to cover there, but I’m going to showcase them all while we build out a practical reporting solution. So I step through the insight we need and then show you how to use a combination of these to get the answers we require. I’ll also show you how I make the visual pop that little bit more so we can get consumers regularly coming back for more.

Day 2 page

On day two I’ll be covering time intelligence, cumulative totals & forecasting techniques

  • Time Intelligence
  • Cumulative Totals
  • Measure branching
  • Budgeting / Forecasting

Again bit to cover here, but all really powerful stuff from an analytical perspective if you combine all of these together and showcase them in a compelling way.

Day 3 page

The third day will be about scenario analysis & also a review of the Power BI Online Service

  • Scenario analysis
  • What if parameters
  • Bookmarks / Drill downs
  • Online Service – Reports, Dashboarding, Q&A, Row Level Security, App Workspaces

Scenario analysis is possibly the most powerful analytical technique in Power BI. You seriously have the ability to almost predict what could happen in the future. So, I’m going to spend a bit of time showing you what you need to do to set this up in your models.

We’ll also be covering a few great features in the Power BI online service. I really enjoy showcasing the Q&A feature. It’s so amazing what’s possible with this feature, so will be diving into that.

Ok that all for this summary of the session.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all there.
