Effective Power BI Reporting – Session Review and Resource Download

by | DAX, Power BI, Webinars

We covered a lot in this Enterprise DNA webinar series session. I appreciate all the positive feedback. You may watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.

I mentioned in the lead up that I would cover a number of areas of Power BI development and we certainly did just that.

As a quick summary here’s what I went through;

  • Building quick fire data models
  • Creating backgrounds with art
  • Dynamic visuals techniques (spent the most time here)
  • Cumulative totals
  • Ranking
  • Finished with some other data viz techniques

So we covered a wide range of things and that’s certainly always my focus if we have time.

As you know I also like to go through a detailed resource during the session and I make this downloadable so you can see how it all fits together – by registering here you can also download it if you haven’t already – Effective Power BI Reporting

As an outline of the data scenario that we worked with here as well, I am analyzing the sales or revenue performance of an organisation which sells things in the US. Some mentioned during the webinar that I’ve used similar types of data in other sessions and were wondering if I covered other scenarios. Well, I certainly do and will do more in time.

A lot of that more unique material covering other scenarios sits within my online training courses at Enterprise DNA Online. You may also check out Dashboarding & Data Visualization Intensive and the extensive Power BI Resources that I package into my training here if you want to learn more.

You can also check out the Enterprise DNA showcase for some examples of Power BI reports such as Inventory Management, Finance, HR, Insurance, Banking, and many others. This is only going to grow so watch out for more in this space.

Also in the session, the most feedback I received was about how you can create these dynamic visuals within Power BI with a combination of DAX formula techniques. It’s a seriously cool way to visualize many key performance metrics and indicators. It’s a technique I like to utilise as much as I can. The amount you can fit into a report grows almost exponentially when you use it.

If you want to see how you can take this even further definitively check out my ‘Multi-Threaded Dynamic Visuals’ approach – this really showcases how far you can take things in Power BI especially if you use DAX really effectively.
