Upcoming Course: Basics Of R For Power BI Users (Part 1)

by | Announcement, Power BI

R is a useful programming language that you can use alongside Power BI. Despite its efficiency, a lot of people are thrown off when they find out that the use of R means that they have to do some coding. But with this course about the basics of R, you’ll find that it might be easier than you think.

This new course was created by one of our new Enterprise DNA Experts, George Mount.

The Importance Of Learning A Second Language In Power BI

Power BI has always been one of the most dynamic tools around for everything data. But despite its vast coverage, it still poses a few limitations. It’s a good thing Power BI was designed to easily work with other tools and platforms, giving users more opportunities to create amazing reports and dashboards.

Learning a second language allows you to do more with your data and double or triple the depth of insights that you get as a result. We’ve already shown through past courses and blog posts, for example, about how Python or SQL can help maximize Power BI’s powers. This is the same thing we’re hoping to achieve once you learn more about the use of R with Power BI.

The Basics of R And How It Can Improve Your Power BI Reports

R is a free platform perfect for statistical computing and visualization. It’s mostly used by statisticians and data miners who want detailed and in-depth analysis on the work they’re doing. The good news is, because you can use R hand in hand with Power BI, you can vastly improve the quality of your reports in so many ways.

There are two main ways that the R language can create a huge impact on your reports — through statistical analysis and through data visualizations. Because it is open source, you can gain access to over 20,000 custom analyses and visualization options that are not available through Power BI alone.

For this course, the focus will mostly be on statistical analysis.

Who The Course Is For

This course is perfect for Power BI users who would like to:

  • Learn a new language to maximize their use of Power BI
  • Perform more statistical analysis using Power BI
  • Enhance their visualizations
  • Go beyond what Power BI offers by default

Because of some intricacies that are unique to the use of R, there are a few areas that you need to be familiar with first before diving fully into this course. These areas include:

  • Variable types (continuous, categorical, etc.)
  • Descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.)
  • Inferential statistics (hypothesis testing, p-values, etc.)

If you are not yet familiar with any of these concepts, it would be good to read the book Advancing Into Analytics. This could run you through some of these basic concepts and could help you keep up with the course requirements more efficiently.

What You Can Learn From This Course

This course is going to give you a rundown of the the basics of R especially from a statistical standpoint. Some of the topics that will be covered are:

  • How to set up R and R Studio on Power BI
  • Basic R programming and analysis
  • Data visualization using R
  • How to build R into a Power BI report

These could give you a solid foundation on how to integrate R into your report development process and could help set you up for more advanced R courses in the future.
