We’ve once again concluded a successful run of our Power BI Challenge! Challenge #3 focused on creating a report around HR data insights. You may watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.
The submissions were definitely impressive, showcasing different techniques and styles. It proved to be a great way to highlight the amazing insights that you can get from Power BI if you know your way around it and apply a little creativity to your approach.
Power BI Challenges
This scenario-based initiative happens bi-weekly, with the details posted on the Enterprise DNA Forum. It’s a great way to share best practices and thought processes and is also an avenue for further learning and growth around Power BI.
Basically, we use scenarios that people may encounter in real life. The objective is to come up with the best solutions for each scenario using the data set provided.
The Enterprise DNA team then reviews the submissions and selects the winner. The winner gets a complimentary membership that unlocks access to even more resources and insights that could further one’s expertise not only in Power BI, but in whatever industry they belong to.
How do we gauge which submissions are the best?
We believe that there are 4 key pillars that can make any Power BI solution a success:
- Loading and transforming data
- Data modelling
- DAX calculations
- Report and visualizations
This is why we assess each submission with these 4 factors in mind.
So far, the challenges have been successful in bringing great minds together. We’ve received amazing responses and hope to see even more participants in the future.
Challenge #3 Results
Just like the previous challenges, the community was given a data set that they could use to come up with the required results.
In this scenario for Challenge #3, an HR Manager needed a report that would show the details of internal consultations about recent policy changes. It’s all about taking a flat table and then optimising the data set for reporting and Power BI.
Even our founder, Sam, admitted that he enjoyed working on this challenge. He worked on it himself, using a lot of the best practices that he often shares on our blog.
As Sam mentioned in his own showcase, the challenge here isn’t really about creating a load of DAX measures. It was more about figuring out how to showcase the insights the most effective way possible.
Haroon also mentioned in the challenge wrap-up that he noticed the participants going for two general approaches.
Approach 1 meant making the fact data as thin as possible. This meant getting all the dates into one column and then having another column for the interview numbers.
As for the 2nd approach, it meant keeping two interview date columns and then using inactive relationships.
Haroon admitted that he found the 1st approach to be more efficient in this scenario.
Of course, one submission stood out among the rest. Let’s give a round of applause to Diana Bello who managed to combine substance and style!
The PowerPoint template she used really did the job of cleanly and clearly presenting the data and the insights gathered from it.
