Allocate Monthly Forecasts Across Daily Results In Power BI Using DAX

In this example, we’re doing a deep dive into budgeting and forecasting inside of Power BI.

Specifically, I want to show you how you can allocate budgets (or forecasts) which might be at a monthly or a yearly level, and you need to allocate them to a daily level.

This scenario is very common when working with any type of forecasted information.

As an example, you may have sales that happen every day but your budgets might be at a different granularity. They might be at a monthly (quarterly or yearly) level but we want to be able to break down these numbers so that there can be a like for like comparison to the daily results we see via our sales.

What we need to do is take the monthly forecasts amount and allocate them up into daily amounts.

To do this inside of Power BI requires a reasonable amount of knowledge around how to set up the data model well and also form the correct relationships between your tables. On top of this, you also need to utilise the right DAX formulas to make this all work within your visualisations.

We cover functions such as TREATAS, CALCULATE, and ALL. All of these functions are key when running this type of analysis.

This is a great revision on how you can do compelling analysis around your budgets and forecast inside of Power BI.

Power BI is a fantastic tool for this type of work. It just requires a really good understanding of how to set it up to make sure it works as it should inside of your Power BI reports.

I’m confident that after viewing this tutorial, you’ll be able to implement this very easily over and over again inside of your own work.
